Regenerative Medicine Q & A

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine at Alliance Spine & Pain uses stem cells sourced from bone marrow or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from your blood to potentially accelerate your body’s natural ability to heal, regenerate cells, and reduce pain.

Your pain specialist administers regenerative medicine treatments via injections under imaging guidance to keep you as healthy and pain-free as possible.

What are the benefits of regenerative medicine?

The benefits associated with regenerative medicine at Alliance Spine & Pain may include:

  • Less pain
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Fast healing
  • Minimal to no risks
  • Utmost safety
  • Low risk of complications
  • Highly effective results
  • Reduced need for invasive procedures
  • All-natural treatments

There’s no pain or extensive downtime associated with regenerative medicine injections.

What are the different types of regenerative medicine treatments?

Alliance Spine & Pain offers the following regenerative medicine options:

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

PRP consists of platelets from your blood that may stimulate natural healing. Your provider takes a blood sample, extracts a concentrated source of platelets, and under imaging guidance, injects PRP into damaged or injured tissues. That includes muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, and intervertebral spinal discs. The treatment often lasts about 30 minutes.

Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) therapy

Alliance Spine & Pain offers injections of BMAC containing mesenchymal stem cells and platelets, which speed up healing and promote cell regeneration. BMAC uses concentrated bone marrow from your hip bone. Your provider places the marrow in a centrifuge to obtain a concentrated source of stem cells.

Under imaging guidance, they inject the BMAC into damaged tissues. The treatment is often used for pain and degeneration within shoulders, hips, knees, and other joints, as well as spinal discs. The entire process usually takes about 45-60 minutes to complete.

What should I expect after regenerative medicine treatment?

Downtime is minimal after receiving regenerative medicine injections, though you may have redness, swelling, and tenderness at the treatment site for a short time.

Follow all post-care instructions, including keeping the treatment area clean and possibly undergoing physical therapy to ensure optimal results. Your provider may recommend multiple treatment sessions.
