What sparked your interest in regenerative medicine, and how did you become involved in this field?

My interest in regenerative medicine sparked over a decade ago when I encountered numerous chronic pain patients who had exhausted conventional therapies without success. Witnessing the limitations of existing techniques and technologies in treating chronic pain conditions, I felt compelled to seek better outcomes for my patients.  Initially I was skeptical as I did not believe the anecdotal reports coming back from patients.  However, I began hearing enough good reports that I began to investigate this field on my own.

I immersed myself in the field by visiting regenerative medicine practices nationwide and attending numerous workshops, conferences, and seminars to understand the techniques thoroughly. Despite being trained to perform these techniques, I remained cautious about incorporating them into my practice because I was still somewhat skeptical.

However, my perspective shifted when I personally experienced the transformative effects of regenerative medicine. Suffering from a right rotator cuff tear injury during intense track and field training, I opted to explore regenerative techniques as an alternative to surgery. After undergoing therapy, I experienced remarkable improvement, and was able to resume training and competing.  This result encouraged me to further explore these treatments.

Over the years, regenerative medicine proved instrumental in my recovery from subsequent injuries, including rotator cuff re-injury and a torn right knee meniscus. Witnessing the efficacy of these therapies firsthand, I transitioned from a skeptic to a believer.

Becoming my own first patient underscored the potential of regenerative medicine, leading me to integrate these techniques into my practice to benefit my patients.

What are some of the innovative techniques and technologies used in regenerative medicine procedures that you find the most interesting?

Some of the innovative techniques and technologies utilized in regenerative medicine procedures that I find particularly intriguing include regenerative cell collection from both bone marrow and adipose tissue. Additionally, the use of alpha-2 macroglobulin (A2M), a compound known for its remarkable ability to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain, is also an area of keen interest.

What role does ongoing research and clinical trials play in advancing regenerative medicine therapies?

Ongoing research and clinical trials play a pivotal role in advancing regenerative medicine therapies. As with any specialized field of medicine, clinical research trials are essential for exploring new treatment modalities, refining existing techniques, and ultimately improving patient outcomes. Personally, I hold a particular interest in the importance of clinical trials and their contribution to the advancement of regenerative medicine.

How do you envision the future of regenerative medicine evolving, and what potential breakthroughs do you anticipate?

I envision the future of regenerative medicine which utilizes holistic biological techniques that revolutionize healthcare. As our understanding and expertise in this field increases, I anticipate significant advancements in enhancing the body's natural regenerative and healing processes. These breakthroughs will not only extend to the treatment of systemic diseases, but also pave the way for the regeneration of musculoskeletal structures. With continued research and innovation, regenerative medicine holds the promise of transforming the landscape of healthcare.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of the job is seeing patients improve clinically, and get back to living their normal life.

What does your daily routine look like?

I usually perform interventional procedures in the morning, have patient consultations in the afternoon, and a break in between for lunch and handling miscellaneous questions from staff and patients.

If you weren't practicing as a pain relief physician, what other career path do you envision yourself pursuing?

While I find my current role as a pain relief physician fulfilling, I also have a passion for aviation. In addition to my medical career, I've pursued aviation by obtaining a multi-engine instrument rating.

Do you have any advice for people hoping to work in your field?

Do not lose your sense of curiosity and passion for medicine.

What do you like to do outside the office?

Outside of the office, I have a passion for masters track and field sprints. Although I've decided to step back from competing to prevent potential injuries, I still enjoy occasional sprinting sessions to stay active and maintain my love for the sport.
